In the  70`s members of  Glasgow`s Famous Gallon Club [then known as the Scotstoun boys]would head off to the Apollo theatre to watch some of the greatest bands of all time.

The Apollo provided artists with the opportunity to perform in front of one of the most discerning and demanding audiences in the world. Such was its reputation that one relieved act is reputed to have printed T-shirts saying: "....I played the Apollo and survived". Others, such as Joe Loss, Roxy Music, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Status Quo and the SAHB made their names at the venue and many including Paul McCartney, Nazareth and The Stranglers recorded classic live sets there. Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade says that for her "...it was an amazing feeling playing there, better than the Albert Hall". Tom Robinson told us that the Apollo audience was "just the wildest, warmest audience a band could ever want."

For sheer quality and distinction you need look no further than the career of Benny Gallagher.

One half of hit makers and blue chip songwriters Gallagher & Lyle; he began his career as a staff writer with the Beatles Music Publishing Co. Apple writing songs for Apple Records biggest artist Mary Hopkin.

In 1970 his and Graham Lyle's astute composing ability propelled the band McGuinness-Flint to the top of the charts with their hit songs "When I'm Dead and Gone" and "Malt and Barley Blues".

Then came the duo's own string of successes – the richly romantic " Heart on my Sleeve " and " I Wanna Stay With You ". Their Breakaway album was a huge success – even more so when the title track was "covered" by Art Garfunkel.

On record he has worked with: Paul McCartney - Eric Clapton - Pete Townsend - Ronnie Lane - Ronnie Wood - Gary Brooker - Georgie Fame - Mary Hopkin - Elkie Brooks - Ralph McTell - Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention, as well as Blues legends Arthur " Big Boy " Crudup (who wrote  " That's Alright Mama " for Elvis Presley) and Champion Jack Dupree.
