BURNS COTTAGE ALLOWAY
AYR AUGUST 1967
Bairdstravel`s first ever holiday was spent at the Clydecoast resort of Ayr. We went by bus from Anderston bus station and the journey took about 1hour 30mins. I was very excited because I had never seen the sea before. We had always spent any time off at our Grandparents in Slamannan. The bus seemed to take for ever. My dad kept asking me
can you see the sea yet son? No yet da.
I can still recall to this day,the bus went over a hill and finally I could see the sea. I remember it being so blue with huge waves rushing to shore.
We stayed at a council flat in Dallmiling. Which was not far from the
racecourse. The family were away on holiday . So they put an advert in the Daily Record which my mother and father replied to. The cost was £20 for the week.
The highlight for me was the family had a son and he left me a pile of Victor comics. I never had the travel bug then.

Ayr is a coastal town which lies on the mouth of the River Ayr. The river then flows out onto the larger Firth of Clyde. From the coast Arran can be seen on a clear day. It is within the region of Strathclyde. Much of the land in and around this area is very flat and low lying. Much of the land however towards the south of Ayr is higher than most areas in the county of Ayrshire. Ayr lies approximately 35 miles southwest of Glasgow.
