PLEASE TAKE TIME TO LISTEN TO GREENMANTLE ON MYSPACE THEIR STORY FROM THE PAST "..During the seventies, we were a three piece acoustic harmony band and opened the UCS. Benefit gig at Greens Playhouse on Sun. 30th April, 1972. We even did an encore, (probably one of very few support bands to do so) also on the bill were- JSD Band, Darryl Adams and Gallagher and Lyle with Billy Connolly comparing.
We all were supporting Donovan, who it must be said, did not enamour himself with any of us, and was very aloof and wouldn’t not let any of the support acts use his pa. system. We all used Gallagher and Lyle’s. The other members of Greenmantle were Jack Law and Ian Campbell. The gig was organised to raise funds for the “Upper Clyde Shipbuilding yard. The workers had staged a sit in at the yard and were on strike for a long time, so this was one of the ways of helping out the workforce who badly needed help. Jimmy Reid was the works convener at the time.
There is also a great story which has been backed up by many people about a stranger arriving at the yard gates the day before the gig, and handing in an envelope and a dozen red roses. Inside the envelope, was a cheque for £5,000, the man asked for it to be kept quiet, he was given two tickets for the concert and he left. He did go to the concert incognito.
The stranger was none other than the man himself, John Lennon. He was very much into the socialist movement; wish I had known at the time.
Anyway back to Greenmantle; Ian left the band later at the end of 1972, Jack and I carried on as a two piece. On Friday the 11th of October 1974, we opened the show for Wishbone Ash, at the Apollo, we even did an encore then as well. It was a great night.
We formed into a four piece in 1975 and had a single out on the Philips label called “terminal.” We disbanded early 1977, and I kept gigging with different bands up till about two years ago when I got a call from my old friend Benny Gallagher, (Galagher & Lyle) , asking me to play some gigs with him so I have been doing that. We have also worked with Jim Diamond, and JJ. Gilmour (ex silencers,) we are doing a few things in Dec 05, and the Celtic Connections in Jan 06, then a tour is being arranged for the spring.
