YOU are invited to the events run by Wellington Church INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB. Every Friday evening during the academic year we meet in the church hall at 77 Southpark Avenue, Glasgow G12 8LE.
The club is FREE and the aim is to ensure people new to the city have a chance to find their way around, have someone to help them answer questions, can use their conversational English and have fun while meeting new friends.

The programme is below: YOU are welcome. Come along and try the INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB. While it is held in the hall of Wellington Church (the Greek temple-like building facing UNIVERSITY AVENUE across from Glasgow University main gates) it is not out to seek converts! WELLINGTON CHURCH INTERNATIONAL CLUB
PROGRAMME 2010 Feb - April
Friday 29 January Burns Night
Grace,
Thanks very much for inviting me and my wife to the
Burns Supper. We really enjoyed the evening.
The food was superb, the entertainment was good and the people
so friendly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below is Grace`s account of our Burns supper. This give`s you an idea the effort that is put in by the International Club.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More than 70 people from around the world were welcomed to a Burns Evening held in Wellington Church crypt on 29 January by members of the congregation and their International Welcome Club via their MC for evening, Grace Franklin. An excellent supper of haggis pie with vegetarian version, biscuits and cheese, coffee and home made shortbread, was provided by the church volunteers.
The minister of the Glasgow West End church on University Avenue, the Rev Dr David Sinclair, started the entertainment in style with a lusty 'Address to the Haggis'.
Robert Burns' Selkirk Grace was then said in four languages -
Japanese by Anne Setsuko from Tokyo,
Welsh by native speaker Mary Sinclair,
English by Christine Scott and
Scots by Heather McMillan.
All four ladies are involved with the International Club which meets every Friday at 7.30pm in the church hall on Southpark Avenue and it open to anyone from anywhere.
Professional singer Irene Conway sang 'For the Sake of Somebody' and had the gathering singing along with 'Charlie is my Darling.' But before she sang one note, everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' to her.
Husband and wife Fami and Carol were the appropriate couple to recite 'John Anderson my Jo, John' as they've been together in Nigeria and Scotland for well over 30 years.
Christine Johnston and Mary Sinclair then sang two songs - not Burns - but beautiful because of the blend of their voices. More such duets are hoped for from them at future events.
Senior congregation member Olivia Scott gave a very humorous rendition of the Douglas Kinoch poem telling of the after effects of eating haggis.
Renowned folk singer Duncan Luncan then gave a couple of his tongue-twisting, best songs which were enjoyed by those who could decipher the dialect quickly enough.
A prime attraction on the evening was Lade Oduyemi, the cockney speaking Glaswegian resident from Nigeria who wore the kilt with aplomb. He excelled in his delivery of 'A Man's a Man for a' that.'
Finishing with an impromptu choir led by Sandy Small an intinerent organist and singer in the Wellington Church Choir, the evening was drawn to a happy close with 'Auld Lang Syne' and a comprehensive vote of thanks from Christine Scott.
