LAKE COMO WEEKEND BREAK IN BERGAMO MARCH 2007 STAYED MERCURE HOTEL RYANAIR PRESTWICK TO BERGAMO SAT MORNING TRAIN BERGAMO TO LECCO LECCO TO VARENNA BOAT TO BELLAGIO weather dull GREAT DAY OUT Lake Como (Lago di Como) is one of the famous Italian Lakes destinations, not far from Milan in the north of Italy. Lake Como is long (50km), slender and extremely deep. The southern end forks into two long 'legs', with the picturesque town of Bellagio situated on the promontory between them Bellagio Few places are as romantic as Lake Como, and even fewer resorts as beautiful as Bellagio. Called the “Pearl of the Lake”, Bellagio's world class hotels and restaurants provide the perfect place to soak up the lake's famous panorama. The village is characterised by century-old buildings, stone lanes and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares.
BERGAMO Bergamo (population 120,000) is an extremely pretty old town in Lombardy, on the edge of the Alps. Bergamo's original location was a defensive hilltop, and the town was also protected by stout walls; nowadays this historic part of town is known as the Città Alta (upper town) and it's where you will find most of the historic buildings and tourist sights. There is little traffic, and the narrow lanes are pleasant to wander.
Most of modern Bergamo spreads over the plain below the old town. This Città Bassa (lower town) was laid out around the beginning of the twentieth century, and is composed of pleasant wide boulevards. The two parts of town are linked by a funicular. Bergamo contains many sights of interest and architectural beauty, and there's plenty to see on a weekend break as well as the possibilities of trips further afield. Bergamo is also a pleasant daytrip from Milan.
Varenna
Varenna is a peaceful resort, smaller than Bellagio and also very beautiful. You can admire views from the Castello de Vezio or simply relax by the lakside. Varenna Tourist Information Office is in Piazza San Giorgio.
Lecco Lecco is a rather commercial and industrialised town on the least touristy section of Lake Como, the fiord-like eastern branch of the lake. However, the town has good public transport, good opportunities for serious mountain-walking
